Old Acquisitions
24 February 2025

Sometimes acquisitions arrive at the museum days or even weeks after purchase. This is especially true for long-distance purchases. Today, exactly one hundred antique pipes arrived from far across the border, having been in the care of a widow for years, awaiting a buyer. Most of the material is meerschaum and is of the highest quality. Some large-format portraits are so lifelike that they are true masterpieces of carving. The group also includes several pipes made of ivory, bone, and silver. For now, the acquisitions, removed from their protective packaging, simply lie on the floor of our library, awaiting registration.

20 February 2025

Today is International Pipe Smoking Day, where all pipe smoking enthusiasts come together to celebrate their good taste and innocent habit. We all remember Sherlock Holmes as the iconic pipe smoker. That is why we choose this special specimen from our collection as a photo for this day. This Peterson pipe has become an icon itself. Enjoy your pipe!

The first acquisition of this year, somewhat later than usual, we acquired in auction today . It is a special Inuit pipe made from a flat piece of walrus tusk or morse. At the bottom the image of a squid is carved, possibly a humpback whale. The pipe is also interesting because the transition from the characteristic Inuit pipe with the minimal bowl started here. Not long after, most Inuit smoked pipes derived from the Western European type to smoke more tobacco at the same time.
