Visitors from Mexico
11 juin 2025

We already knew that the museum is really popular for youngsters in their twenty- and thirty’s. However, as staff we are always surprised that people from the other side of the world know how to find us and put the Amsterdam Pipe Museum at the top of their bucket list. This week we received extensive compliments from a young couple from Mexico, the birthplace of pipe smoking. How fun is that!

Today it is exactly thirty years ago that we moved into the building at Prinsengracht 488. Back then as the Pijpenkabinet, now the Amsterdam Pipe Museum. Thirty years to look back on with pride. In today's world where smoking a pipe is only for the diehards, we have continuously collected, studied and published on that subject and its history. In this way we safeguard this unique culture. In addition, we have set up a beautiful museum, which fortunately still enjoys great admiration every day.

Our museum recently received a precious donation from the widow of former mayor Ed van Thijn. This skilled administrator enjoyed smoking a cigar. When the mayor of Jakarta came to visit, he brought a hand-carved teak box containing cigars of all shapes and sizes. Each specimen has a printed label with the name of Ed van Thijn, a name that also adorns the lid of the large cigar box. This special humidor, including its precious contents, can be seen from 2 June to 2 August in the Amsterdam Pipe Museum.
