Diana, Bacchus, garlands


Tobacco pipe made of meerschaum with high cylindrical Hungarian bowl, round base without heel and slightly rising, almost straight stem with stub. Bowl and stem fluted alongside, the front of the bowl a standing oval with a sitting Diana in a landscape, left a deer, a radiant sun on the top left, bowl stem side a standing oval with on a barrel a seated Bacchus with pitcher and winegrower, pipe stem on both sides two standing naked boys, between the main motifs garlands with leaves and flowers, a wrapped ribbon around bowl opening and stem end, stub with band with pointed leaves. Meerschaum in two colours, the fond soft brown tinted. Original mounting with cast silver valve cover with swirling leaves and flowers, a button on the lid with small lid for extra air supply, worked clamping. Stem end provided with a silver strap with locking ring. Lid internal label with handwritten collection number "1". Matching case with red leather exterior with gold lines and leaf gold leaf motifs, three locking hooks, inside purple velvet and white silk.

Dit was blijkbaar de meest prestigieuze pijp uit de Beierse collectie getuige het collectienummer 1. Hoewel van grote luxe in vormgeving en montage inclusief het etui is het snijwerk zeker fraai maar niet van topkwaliteit.
