Description:
Oil painting on canvas of a bust of a woman looking on, a beret with a feather on the head, a clay pipe in the raised right hand, in front of her a wooden box with two compartments on which smoking utensils consisting of three short clay pipes, a pipe stopper, a burning wick, an ashtray and another, two glasses behind the pipe bowl. Original gilt frame with simple leaf motifs in the four corners. |

Bijschrift: Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun (1755-1842), peintre de Marie-Antoinette, ne nous a pas seulement légué ses délicats portraits, elle nous confirme dans son autoportrait qui si une dame de la haute société n'avait peur de fumer la pipe, elle n'hésistait pas non plus à símmortaliser celle-ci à la main. Autoportrait de l'artiste, habillée à la mode écossaise et fumant une pipe d'argile. Au premier plan: un coffret d'accessoires de fumeur garni de pipes en terre, un briquet à amadou et un bourre-pipe. Dimensions à la vue H: 82 L: 64. Paris ?, France, vers 1780/1785 (coll. Alfred Dunhill Ltd, Londres). Originellement l'artiste avait laissé la pointe de son sein gauche. Bien des années plus tard, vers 1950, le tableau fut exposé dans la salle de réunion du conseil d'administration de Dunhill à Londres. La tradition de la Maison raconte que Mary Dunhill, l'épouse d'Alfred Henry Dunhill, offusquée, exigea de faire recouvrir cette 'choquante' nudité par un voile de pudibonderie. |
