Description:
Tobacco pipe made of meerschaum with high cylindrical bowl with slightly outstanding bowl rim, round bottom without heel and up going stem with stub. Bowl front in relief standing Diana with bow in the left hand and quiver on the back, a hunting dog left behind her, the goddess standing on a cloud-shaped ground and surrounded by a frame with running leaf between which deer antlers, dead birds and central a hunting horn where a hare crawls through. On either sides elongated trophy of curled leaves and c-volutes between which left an arrow quiver and a horn and right bunches of grapes. Bowl underside rocaille in acanthus leaves. Mounting with silver valve cover with worked bowl rim on which leaf motifs, eight-sided drum lid with open-cut wall niches and engraved masonry bonding, flap top engraved escutcheon with angel with sword including monogram of the initials "FE" and on both sides year "1840". Bowl opening stamped in silver makers mark "HM". Silver cuff ring with leaf motifs and elegant locking ring. |

In de stijl van de handgesneden Hongaar maar wel slank is deze pijp een knap staaltje van persmeerschuim. Het is de vraag of de roker van toen ooit geweten heeft dat het geen blokmeerschuim was. |
