Description:
Tobacco pipe made of stoneware with pear shaped bowl, moist trap and up going stem widening to a thin stub. Bowl so-called jasper ware with blue fond with white appliqués, on the left grieving boy and two male figures, one with shield and on the right Hercules with the Nemean lion. Bowl front ornament with stylized leaves. Stem near bowl, cuff and a moist trap flowers and leaves. Stem bottom intaglio "WEDGWOOD M". Stem bottom ring for lock string. Wooden stem with buffalo horns end piece with stem knot. |

| Vgl. APM 22.311 vergelijkbaar object maar vroeger. Als de M een jaarletter is staat die voor 1884. Stichting Pijpenkabinet, ansichtkaart, 1998. De voorstelling is niet direct naar de antieken, maar eerder geïnspireerd op de schildering van Zuid-Italische vazen uit de 4de eeuw waarop treurende figuren bij een naiskos, een graftombe in de vorm van een kleine tempel. |
