Renaming of porcelain pipes

A frequently asked question is: what do you do all day? Well, besides ongoing tasks like guiding visitors, answering emails, maintaining contacts, and caring for the housing and collection, there's the ever-ongoing research. This week, for example, we studied historical porcelain pipe names. The designations in our collection database were compared with those in publications and factory catalogues. Goal is to gain a better understanding of the names and to provide accurate descriptions in our database. Out of the 1,200 porcelain pipe names online, quite a number were revised. For example, many Berliner stummels have been renamed muts, which sounds less formal but is historically more accurate. About eighty pipe names were renamed during this comparative study.
