Description :
Tobacco pipe of meerschaum with a high Hungarian bowl, outstanding bowl rim, round bottom without heel and ascending stem with disc-shaped stub. Bowl front facing in relief the bust of a monarch with stand-up collar, five awards and sash, below carvers signature of monogram in reclining oval. Stem some constricted lines underneath. Original mounting with silver flap lid with worked edges, drum-shaped lid with flat top engraved "AM 5TEN APRIL 1840", silver hallmarks in lid ring, stub ring of silver with worked outer edge and loching eye. Matching wooden case with red morocco exterior and dark blue velvet interior. |

| Brongers vermoedt in zijn aantekeningen dat de afgebeelde Frederik Willem IV van Pruisen is, die in 1840 aan de regering kwam. Later meldt hij Ferdinand I keizer van Oostenrijk, 1830 koning van Hongarije, op 2 december 1848 opgevolgd door zijn neef Franz Joseph. Kimm spreekt van de keizerspijp, de belangrijkste meerschuim uit de Niemeyer collectie en schrijft het portret toe aan de vader van Franz-Joseph. |
