SIR WALTER RALEIGH POPULARISED THE SMOKING HABET, MUCH TO THE ANNOYANCE OF KING JAMES I AND IT IS SAID THAT THE LUMP UNDER THE BOWL OF THESE CHURCHWARDENS IS A MEMENTO OF SIR WALTER'S BEARD. DURING THE LAST FOUR CENTURIES THESE PIPES HAVE BEEN MADE IN ALMOST EVERY CORNER OF THE LAND. IN DAYS GONE BY, A MAN WOULD BUY A GLASS OF BEER, TOBACCO AND MATCHES AND COULD ENJOY THE FREE USE OF A CLAY PIPE IN HIS LOCAL PUB. AT THE END OF THE EVENING THE LANDLORD WOULD COLLECT ALL THE PIPES AND PLACE THEM IN THE FIRE OVERNIGHT THUS CLEANING AND STERILISING THEM FOR THE NEXT DAYS USE.
